About Salt
Pond and The Point Judith Harbor Of Refuge
Point Judith Pond has long been one of New England's important fishing
ports. More recently, because of its accessibility and proximity to
popular fishing grounds, the pond is a popular harbor for cruising,
sailing and sport fishing. Located on the west bank of Narragansett Bay,
Point Judith Pond is protected by a three section granite breakwater. The
east and west entrances provide a protected passage into the Harbor of
Refuge no matter which wind direction is prevailing.
The breakwater has land access from the east and west jetties, providing
anglers, bird watchers and sight seers great photo opportunities.
Its location, nine miles from Newport to the northeast and nine miles from
Block Island to the southwest makes it a convenient location for permanent
or transient dockage. On the east bank of Point Judith Pond is
Galilee,
home to many commercial fishing vessels, charter and party boats, fish
buyers and processors, along with the Block Island ferry boats,
On the west bank, picturesque Jerusalem Following the channel north along
the west bank leads to Snug Harbor and its several marinas.
The pond proceeds north and east in a long winding channel which can
accommodate vessels up to 50 feet. Kayaks, canoes, small power and sail
boats and charter boats providing visitors with countless photo
opportunities. |
