Providence
Grays Vintage Base Ball Club
Vintage baseball is the greatest American game of baseball played in the
original nineteenth century spirit of amateurism and friendly competition. The
teams make every effort to play according to the original rules, and to wear
authentic uniform and equipment. All skill levels are welcome in vintage
baseball, but be warned: we wear no mitts!!!
Today’s Providence Grays were formed in tribute to the 1884 National League
team. That was the first year that overhand pitching was allowed. Providence’s
Hall of fame pitcher Charles Radbourn pitched almost every game for the last 2
months of the season, won a record 59 games, and then beat the New York
Metropolitans in all three games of the first world championship series.
The Providence Grays Vintage Base Ball Club was formed in 1998, and has played
regularly in New York, New Jersey, and throughout New England, playing
approximately 35 games each year. So come by Sprague Park this August and see
how the game was once played!
