U.S. Junior Olympic
Skills Competition 2007 Winners
Watch for 08 winners
This past spring, the Recreation Department held the US Junior Olympic
Skills Competition for the first time. This is a free Olympic sports
program which teaches youth about the advantages of living a healthy
lifestyle by promoting fitness, physical activity and sports
participation. This spring and summer children from across the nation
competed in more then 5,700 local qualifying events and 150 regional
competitions in basketball, soccer, tennis and track & field. The top
three scorers in each age group and sport were then selected as finalists
to compete for the title at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado
Springs. There were 72 finalists from 32 states, three of which came from
Narragansett!! They are:
Jonathan Tartaro was 1 of 3 national finalists in the 8 - 9 year old boys
soccer division. Jonathan won the GOLD MEDAL!
Jaclyn Iannucci was 1 of 3 national finalists in the 10 - 11 year old
girls soccer division. Jaclyn won the BRONZE MEDAL!
Lee Messier was 1 of 3 national finalists in the 10 - 11 year old boys
basketball division. Lee won the BRONZE MEDAL!
