Would YOU consider ADOPTING A CEMETERY?
In conjunction with Director of
Parks and Recreation Barry Fontaine the Town of Narragansett, Evelyn
Wheeler of Narragansett has embarked on a campaign to locate, clean up
and and make the public aware of these Historic Cemeteries
There are 29 Narragansett documented cemeteries 5 of which have been moved
to South Kingston or North Kingston. 8 have not been found.
Dating back to the the 1700's, they are an important part of Narragansett
history and the family heritage of many Narragansett families. Most of the
"residences" of these cemetery’s were the original inhabitants of
Narragansett, known as "Planters" They farmed here, built houses, stores,
railroads, shipping piers, etc.
Luckily , at present, there are 8 being taken care of by volunteers. That
leaves 6 to be cared for. The Parks and Recreation Dept are trying to do
it on a "time available" basis. We are asking local civic organizations,
schools, individuals or families to help support the effort.
If you should happen to have one of the locations listed below in your
neighborhood or near where you work, you can honor them by
"adopting-a-spot" near you or pick a name of a pioneer and volunteer to
help us spruce it up once or twice a year.
If interested contact Barry Fontaine at this web site or 782-0657. Or
Evelyn Wheeler at
eviewhee@verizon.net or call 789-3503.
