About Us: Frederick J. Wilson III founded the South County Independent after a long and distinguished career as a newspaper publisher. His intent was to produce a weekly newspaper that would not be beholden to corporate interests. Together with his investors, he formed South County Newspapers, and the first edition of the paper was printed on Oct. 16, 1997. The paper was successful from the start, attracting many subscribers in its first year and quickly gaining a reputation for quality. In 2000, three years after its opening, the paper was named Newspaper of the Year in its circulation category by the New England Newspaper Association, and it won the same honor in 2005. The paper also has won numerous awards from the New England and Rhode Island press associations, and in 2004 won first place in the General Excellence category of the New England Press Association's annual Better Newspaper Contest.
